Hello everyone, my 17 year old son took his 5th theory test recently and failed again. The most he has been away from passing is 5 marks and the last two tests he was only 2 marks from passing. Each time he has passed the hazard perception with flying colours. He was diagnosed with dyslexia last year. The last two tests he has used the headphones which was easier for him but he cant understand why he keeps missing it by so feww marks. He is ready to do his practical test but cant book it until he has passed the dam theory. It is very frustrating for him and very upsetting for his family to see him so disappointed. I agree with you all about how unfair the system is and its obviously not designed for dyslexics in mind, its descrimination! Anyone got advice on how he can nail it? He has cdrom, highway code etc.

Just been diagnosed with dyslexia myself. I work in web design and computer systems. Struggled through college. Cannot pass the theory test! Failed it 4 times, pass the hazard perception every time but can't get past the questions!

hi everyone,i just had my theory test today and i faild on hazard....i really think that it is discrimination it a stupid thing becouse last time it have been the same clips and ive got 70...can anyone help me ,please????

Hi everyone. i have booked my theory test, i heard that all questions have been changed from junuary 2012 and not published, Does someone have been passed the test after thees changes?thanks..

I have just taken my theory test today for the third time and failed once again! I completely understand where everyone is coming from when they say how unbelievably frustrating it is because you cannot remember 190 odd questions! The DSA needs to make allowences for this like only having to do 25-30 odd questions because we have a crap short term memory

There is hope for dyslexic passing there therory, just have the voice over,its not so much reading the question but actually understanding the question. My son is dyslexic and he failed the 1st therory by one mark, he then done another therory a wk later and passed. the cd rom are helpful just practice understanding the question in what they are actually asking and as soon as you nail the problem in the question your answers will be easy.

when you book the test you have the option of a voice over to read out the qestion and answers so the words that you not understand are read out. their is a way to have more time but you have to have offical proof of dyslexia.

i have dyslexia but i have found ways to help me the trick is to find a way that suits you and however silly it seems a learning method use it.

my hardest qestion were the discription of a seane, so i draw the discription with my finger on the desk, i get a visual better in my mind of the sene. i have the theory test qestions disk i go through each qestion and checking each one as i go. the ones i get wrong i put in a seprate note book, i have cartoons silly saying and jokes next to each text and this meens extra time each qestion. i said out loud each qestion and my husband made a joke for each one and this also sticks in the mind, to help me remember, i know its takes time for me to learn and i alow for this.

hi i read my book theory three times and i also read the hazard code book which is very very useful, i had a dvd to practice, i started getting 50 out of 50 on the dvd so i booked my test cause i new i was ready and i passed 1st time i got 50 out of 50 and 65% in hazard,its not hard, you just need to put your mind into it, and if you dont no the meaning of any word just google it,i not clever at all but i can say one thing if i can do it you can,good luck to everyone,i wish u pass x

It is definitely much more difficult with dyslexia to have a chance at passing the driving theory test. Everyday driving does not require you to understand longer words or deal with questions which are designed to trip people up who have no difficulty in reading, it is not a fair test for anyone with a reading difficulty. They should have the right to have someone with them (obviously not someone they know) who can help them with the understanding of the question. This seems like quite a basic service which should be available. My husband has had 8 attempts at theory tests over as many years and failed each time due to his dyslexia. The cost of this alone is unfair, but the inconvenience to him as an independent adult not to be able to drive a car at his age because of his disability is upsetting. Every time he fails it completely undermines his confidence and it takes a long time for him to build up again, it also means he has to keep up regular driving lessons to keep him test ready if he was to pass. Does anyone know if there are any official channels we can appeal to for them to have a bit more thought for people with dyslexia trying to complete the test?

Take a look at drivingtheory4all - they have voiceovers as well as text highlighting to make it easier to follow the voice.

I am 23 years old ive had 3 theory tests and ive failed them all. what gets me is that i can pass my theory test and my hazard perception test on the theory test cd Rom. now on the theory test at the test center ive have Extra time, and i have a reader on the eye phones. and i still can't pass so if anyone has any suggestion please give me an email MANY THANKS

Like others my son is desperate to be able to drive but is really struggling with the theory.

i have dyspraxia aswell it took me 3 time to pass my theory test and on the 3rd time i got every question right.which i was amazed at..i found the solution for me was not to revise weeks n weeks b4 hand!on my third attempt i revised 3 times b4 the test and i was even revising literately in the door to the test room

I too have dyspraxia, was diagnosed as a child, im now 29 and still have it. The key is practise a lot before the theory, if she has a android phone - download the android app, if she has a laptop buy her ''Driving test success'' it all helps. I too convinced myself a long time ago that i couldn't do it, was practically sh**ing myself when i walked into the DSA theory test centre, but when i got there the test was extremely simple. The questions were well introduced and each (pre) exam section had a handy tutorial, as with the hazard perception you get a video tutorial and a practice & when i had finished, 30 minutes later i got a pass there and then.

Best thing to do with your sister is just tell her not to panic, take it easy - relax and practise a few mock exams first

My sister suffers from Dyspraxia and we are finding it hard getting her to practice the theory as she has got it into her head that she just plain can't do it. Any advice?

i can read but find it hard to understand and is there any way i can have a person next to me in a test to give me glues and understanding a question like if you was at college, im finding it hard to pass my theory i keep getting 40 out of 50 but i always pass on the hazard is any way they can just pass me on after all it is only 3 questions more to get a pass

It is easy for some to say 'just memorize the questions' but some people need to realize that people who suffer with dyslexia find it hard to memorize a lot. I think the DSA need to be more understanding for people with special needs.

my son is wanting to do his driving lessons which he is confident in . now the theory scares him because he has dislexia and dispraxia which means he cant read or right properly. also its hard to teach him because of his dispraxia which is short term memory loss.he is very good at hands on but not when it comes to reading or writing .please could you send me some info on how i can get him through this .thank you donna...

I would agree with Anita on dyslexia discrimination. dyslexic tend to have better spaceal vision so are better at driving. Examiners should try harder to control them self’s instead of others. More self control more freedom!

diagnosed dyslexics can get extra time on the test and possibly a human reader which can often make a gret deal of difference to anxiety levels. it must be arranged in advance and evidence will be needed.

Going for my theory test on 24th august. Practicing using the CD Rom.

I reccomend it as im getting good results from it, easy to use and it covers everything from theory to hazard perception.

You can get it from WH smith. Goodluck people.

my son has ad 5 theories he has got it into his head he will never pass it his driving is excellent please can anyone help i have been on most websites but there is no help for them apart from some one to read,what about explaining the long words that can be used in a different context which they could understand.it is discrimination for all that suffer from dyslexia and as for the contents in the theory book they dont need to no half of whats in it anyway.

If it is a matter of memorizing, make flash cards of facts to be memorized. Whenever you have a few minutes, study them. As you learn a fact remove the card.

I am 19 and am finding it really hard to do my theory,i have been doing online and i have never passed it this is makin me not wont to do it for real.i no the stuff just get confused because they word the questions diffrently all the time i need to do it because i wont to do care work and need transport.

my son is getting very disspondant after failing the driving theory test many times, his self esteem has taken a real battering. His actual driving is great says his AA driving instructor.
