How to teach him to complete homework assignments independently? He is now 8, and refuses to work with direct contact with an adult.

firstly, try to find out why he is unwilling to work without an adult present - he's probably terrified underneath whatever behaviour he's exhibiting?
It sounds like a confidence/security issue, which will need to be addressed before he can be expected to do so, and it will need to be done in stages. Just telling a child they have to do it and going 'cold turkey' will worsen the problem.
Just an opinion. No idea how to advise without knowing the reason behind his reluctance to study indepenently. Eight is not really that old, especially not if there are learning difficulties present.
