my son has dcd, i have just moved him schools after relocating and have been told that he isnt entitled to any of the help (one to one etc) that he was recieving in his old school without a statement, he cannot function in a classroom without this help, how long does it take to get a statement and what does it entail and how do i get one?? surely they cant leave him struggle and have to offer him some kind of help? my son is very disruptive in class, has no attention span, does not interact with other children, and is often in a world of his own. im not getting anywhere and the longer this goes on, the more tantrums i have to face every morning trying to get him to go to school :( any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Even if your child does not have a statement he sounds like he should have an IEP individual learning plan, this will identify his needs and should provide realistic goals for him to achieve. Book an appointment with the schools SENCO and ask for one to be put in place asap. It should be assessed and signed by you at least every half term. Also it may be worth seeking support from the local Parent Partnership in your area who can usually help you liase with school. It may be an idea to go to your GP and ask for up to date assessment from OT who will see him in school I expect. Keep a record of everything you have done as it will be a useful reference if you try for a statement later.
