Hello,
I am dyslexic and I have three degrees, two of which are in design (graphic and media).
Oddly enough I also have a degree in teaching. I don't share I'm dyslexic with other teachers, as there is unfortunately a lot of misunderstanding and judgment apparent in the teaching profession (Australia).
I speak Dutch and English and have studied in both languages. Until I studied graphic design I wasn't aware of structure in text. After learning how to put a magazine together I understood sequence of information. Decoding information was post Academia. I learnt to decode and build image using symbolism and abstraction. Once I understood semeiotics, genres, subject, composition etc. in image I could access information using a similar structures. I find it incredibly difficult to apply phonetics in language and teaching it this way almost impossible. I rely on visuals and kinesthetics heavily during literacy lessons to be able to communicate concepts.
Joy.
