Lisa, I would suggest you try and help them with the self esteem issue. I think the motivation will follow. I'm 41 and I have struggled with low self esteem all my life. Last year I realzed something amazing (to me). Words have an emotional value. All of us have a negative voice inside. When we listen to that voice tell us negative things it brings us to a low emotional state and hurts our self esteem.
So the first thing I would tell your adult learner is they need to stop listening to the negative voice inside. In fact as soon as they start hearing that negative voice... think of something else. I've found keeping positive quotes on hand for times when those negative thoughts pop up very usefull. This negative voice perpetuates the low self esteem. I would suggest the book ''Six Pillars of Self Esteem'' by Nathaniel Branden
More to the motivational aspect of your question I would have your learner start looking at what makes people successfull. I think you will find common threads. ''7 habits of highly effective people'' by Stephen Covey is good book. Real quick here are some points: They focus on what they want, they make goals, they take action, failure is part of success - iterate and they don't give up.
I hope this helps. Take care. Andrew
