I've been told that my son may have an auditory processing disorder by his teacher. I'm trying to get a clearer idea of what exactly this is and was wondering if there were any definitions of auditory processing disorder or information about the impact and what can be done for children with an auditory processing disorder.

Hi Jan,
There are some audiologists who specialise in auditory processing disorders, try googling behavioural audiologist. There is a programme called the listening programme which perports to help, you may be able to access this via an Occupational Therapist or a specialist supplier. Google The Litening Program (it is american!)

Dear Jan,
My daughter has been diagnosed with auditory processing disorder. I am trying to find out what therapy others have used with success. I am scheduled to go to Colorado in May to have a full set of tests done. I was given this name by a mother in New York. I am just trying to look at all of the opportunities to help my daughter. If you have run across anything, I would greatly appreciate your feedback. thanks!!!

I have a colleague who uses The Listening Programme with some of the pupils with additional support needs in her school.
She is very impressed and finds it especially helpful for youngsters with ADHD and ASD as it helps them to focus.
However, it is expensive and most state schools would find it hard to fund.
Dr Tracy Packiam Alloway of Stirling University has carried out a great deal of research into working memory. Her team has produced assessments, books and a computer programme to support children with processing difficulties.
